Alex Woods joins U Sports All-Stars at Hockey Canada Summer Showcase

Fredericton, NB – Tommies 2017-18 2nd Team All-Canadian Alex Woods has been invited to the Hockey Canada Summer Showcase as a member of he U Sports Women's Hockey All-Stars.

For the third straight year, the U SPORTS All-Stars will take part in the Summer Showcase, playing four games - two against Hockey Canada's National Women's Development Team, and another pair of contests versus Japan's national women's program.

Alex, a second-year student from Courtice, Ontario,  had a remarkable season in the Atlantic University Sport conference, tallying six goals and 17 assists in regular season play. Her 23 points was the best among defenders in U SPORTS women's hockey. Woods led the Tommies in scoring and was a plus-sixteen on the season—the fifth best ranking in the AUS and in U SPORTS.  The sophomore was also named to the AUS first team all-conference.

"Being selected to be a part of this showcase camp is such a humbling opportunity and I couldn't have done it without my teammates and coaches," Woods said. "At this event, I definitely hope to develop further as a player. I also am really excited to gain experience in the Hockey Canada Program. This camp is a high level of hockey, with very talented players and I am honoured and excited to be attending."

Coach Peter Murphy mentions: "Alex has improved dramatically in only two years with our program and we see this invitation as a great opportunity for her continued development. She is eager to learn and her coachability will be evident while she attends the Showcase."

Alex is the 2nd Tommie in 3 years to be named to the Showcase roster after Kelty Apperson participated in 2016.

The U SPORTS All-Stars had a 2-2 record at the 2017 event, including its first win over Hockey Canada's Development Squad. "What we've done last year and the success we had as a team out at the development camp was great. I really wanted to be a part of building and increasing that visibility of U SPORTS women's hockey moving forward," U Sports All-Stars Head Coach Stacey Colarossi discussed as she returns at the helm of the team entry.

The Summer Showcase will be held August 2-11 at WinSport in Calgary's Canada Olympic Park.

Tommies Women's Hockey hosts pre-season action starting Friday September 14th vs the UPEI Panthers at 7pm and take on the McGill Martlets of the RSEQ on Saturday September 15th at 3pm. Both games will be at the Grant-Harvey Centre.
