Tommies Fall to Panthers in Home Opener

The St. Thomas University Tommies were topped by the University of Prince Edward Island Panthers, 56-14, in men's rugby action Sunday afternoon at Scotiabank Park South.

The Panthers opened the scoring early on a penalty kick in the third minute to give them 3-0 lead to start the match.

The Panthers kept up the pressure, tacking on five tries and widening the gap for the Tommies to 49-0.

The Tommies got on the board in the 65th minute when Zach Klassen forced his way to the end zone to give the Tommies their first try of the day to make the score 49-7 following the conversion.

The Tommies added a second try when Captain Derek Bailey found his way to the line after powering his way through a crowd, narrowing the lead to 49-14.

The leading scorer for the Panthers was Mark Lloyd, putting up 14 points on the day, while Klassen and Bailey put up five points each for the Tommies.

The Tommies are back in action Friday, September 21 when they pay a visit to the Mount Allison Mounties in Sackville at 7:00pm.
