Keeping Up With The Tommies: Dylan Hughes, Men's Soccer (2010-2014)

Dylan Hughes (Fredericton, NB) was a member of the men’s soccer team at St. Thomas University from 2010-11 through 2013-14. During his time in the Green and Gold he left a mark on the pitch and in the classroom, bringing home All-Conference honours in each of his four seasons, being the team’s Rookie of the Year in 2010-11 and the team’s Most Valuable Player in 2012-13, and was a CCAA National Scholar and Academic All-Canadian in each of his four years at STU.

A graduate of the Economics program here at STU, Hughes now resides in Ottawa, ON with his girlfriend, Ashley.

“We moved to Ottawa in 2017 after the completion of my MBA in London, England. I'm working for Shopify, a leading global Ecommerce company,” said Hughes. “I am the Functional Lead, tasked with leading projects with the goal of creating internal tools for our employees. The position is incredible as I work across departments with highly talented individuals who continue to push the boundaries. With my position I'm able to travel a ton, which is one of my favourite parts of the job.”

Hughes grew up in Fredericton, and his family still lives here. His younger sister, Louisa, is a current member of the women’s soccer team, and was last year’s team MVP.

“I love streaming her games, especially in playoffs. Despite not being able to make it there in person, I want her to know that I'm still cheering her on. She continues to impress me every day.”

The bonds he made on the field with his teammates and coaches has formed some his fondest memories and best friends.

“It seemed as though we were constantly faced with adversity going in to the championship matches, however we'd always showed up to play. Unfortunately, we never did have the chance to hoist the trophy. My old teammates continue to be some of my best friends to this day. Instead of seeing each other on the pitch, we often find ourselves sharing memories a few times a year when we can connect. Seeing them become husbands and fathers is one of the most special feelings in the world. I'll forever cherish the moments we shared while Tommies.”

The connection between the Fredericton Wanderers Football Club and the Tommies is also something that Hughes looks back on with cherished memories.

“Former coach Darren Cann and the Tommies new fearless leader, JR Morrison, have paved the way for players in the Fredericton area. The Wanderers program in Fredericton allowed STU players to train together over the course of the summer and I believe this has been a leading factor in the rise of the Tommies men’s soccer team at the CCAA level.”
