What a difference a year can make. The Tommies went from the basement of the ACAA last year to being the second seed in this weekend’s ACAA championships, and ranked #15 in CCAA’s final regular season ranking.
There are several factors to the Tommies’ rise, one being the progression of 3rd year midfielder Kyle Yearwood (Bridgetown, Barbados). Yearwood once again bettered his goal scoring output from last year, netting 5 markers for the Tommies this year, while maintaining his ability to shut down opposing attacks. Yearwood’s play led him to being named 1st Team All-Conference in the ACAA and being named a CCAA All-Canadian.
“Kyle is the heart and soul of the team and in my opinion, the best player in the league,” praised head coach John-Ryan Morrison. “Unfortunately, most of what he’s great at does not get tracked in our league. The countless tackles won, headers won, his ball possession, passing ability. We would have not achieved the success we did this year without him anchoring our midfield.”
Joining Yearwood as a 1st Team All-Conference player this year is 3rd year center-back John Hunter (Fredericton, NB), and on the 2nd Team All-Conference is wing back James Hill (Rothesay, NB), back Eric Prior (Gananoque, ON) and George Tzimas (Toronto, ON).
In his 4th season at the helm of the team, Morrison was named ACAA Coach of the Year for the work he put into the turnaround season.
The Tommies will face 3rd seeded University of King’s College Blue Devils at 4:45pm on Saturday October 27th. You can watch live on ACAAtv.ca.
