Tommies Overcome Early Efforts From Hurricanes To Get Back In Win Column

Fredericton, NB - The St. Thomas University Tommies got back to their winning ways as they overcame the Holland Hurricanes on Saturday afternoon, winning the match match 3-1 (21-25, 25-20, 25-14, 25-11).

The Tommies had lost theiQr previous game but they got themselves back on track at the Lady Beaverbrook Gym.

"We didn't play a good game the last game and the guys have a lot of pride and if they can play at the level they know they can then we can play like we did today," STU coach, Henri Mallet, said after the game.

The two teams started the match with a lot of intensity. They were trading points throughout the first and second sets. They were very evenly matched up to that point as they split the opening two sets and had nearly identical scores in both.

In the third set STU pulled away. The charge was led by Christian Christie (Langley, BC), who finished the game with 16.5 points and 14 kills. He was very efficient every time he attacked the ball and energized the team to push on.

The other standout performers for STU were Gustavo Lobato (Aracaju, BRA), Adam McDougall (Calgary, AB) and Garret Dickson (Miramichi, NB). Dickson was also very efficient in getting his points and he was also responsible for a series of crucial blocks on the Hurricanes' attacks.

"That's the beauty of having four or five guys that we can rely on because if one isn't on then we can still find ways to win," the STU coach said.

The Tommies and Holland will both face each other again on Sunday, at the Lady Beaverbrook Gym.
