Team Play Moves Tommies Past Hurricanes

(Fredericton, NB) After dropping back to back contests the St. Thomas University Tommies got back into the win column with an 84-53 win against the Holland College Hurricanes.

The Tommies had 4 players score in double figures with Bridget Frazee (Sussex, NB) leading the way with 20. Alana Dowling (Quispamsis, NB) and Christina Richardson (Ottawa, ON) both had double-doubles with 17 points and 11 rebounds and 10 points and 11 rebounds, respectively.

The Tommies jumped out to 29-10 lead after the first quarter and they never looked back, leading 44-26 at half.

"That's the way we want to play," said head coach Fred Connors about his team's 23 assists in the game. "We knew that the way they defended they like to come up and get you to try and beat them one-on-one, so we knew there would be some gaps we could take advantage of. We were really happy with how we moved the ball today."

The Tommies put the game out of reach in the second half, with Dowling leading the way.

"We have asked Alana to play outside of her position, if you think in traditional terms," said Connors. "She's really not a post player, but she's so strong. She can play so many positions for us. She was a point guard in high school and now she's playing the post for us at the university level. We are glad to see her get into a rhythm."

Tyleigha Nelson had 13 points and 7 rebounds for the Hurricanes in the loss.

Next action for the Hurricanes will be Saturday, November 17th when they host the Dal AC Rams, while the Tommies head to UNBSJ to face the Seawolves on the 18th.
