Fred Connors and the women’s basketball team continue to put in recruiting work, as Cassy Hemphill will be joining the Tommies for the 2019-20 season.

The 5’10 forward from Grand Falls is the third player to commit to the Tommies for the 2019-20 season, joining Abby Draper (Ottawa, ON) and Samantha Stordy (Moncton, NB). All three players are 5’10”, adding some size to the squad.

“We are very excited to have Cassy join our program,” said Connors. “She is an excellent shooter who will help us stretch the floor. She has worked hard on her ball handling and is a capable post scorer. Having coached Cassy, I know she wants to get better as a player and will contribute to the team in many ways. I saw firsthand how she progressed as a defender when put in new situations and was very impressed with how she worked through her injury last summer. She wants to play. She missed being on the court. And that drive fits perfectly with our team. She has already made connections with our players and knows that it’s team first here. They are very excited to have her join us next season as well.”

Hemphill has ambitions to pursue physiotherapy down the road and looks forward to beginning her academic and athletic journey with St. Thomas.

“After completing a major in psychology, I plan to apply to physiotherapy to pursue a doctorate,” said Hemphill. “The past two years of high school I’ve spent working alongside Sascha Boulet and her Physio First team and my passion for the medical field and helping others has grown immensely. Although STU is focused on liberal arts, they worked hard to make sure I would obtain all I needed to make my final goals of rehabilitation come true.

Being a part of a higher-academic program all throughout high school, academics was an important part towards my final decision. STU was the perfect fit for me due to the close-knit connection I felt from the moment I met with them. The student to professor ratio, the welcoming staff and the effort made to ensure all the needs for me as both an athlete and student were met, made St. Thomas the obvious choice. They made sure to connect with me and ensure that I would feel comfortable and confident in my academic plan.”

“When I first made contact with Fred I was instantly drawn to the program,” continued Hemphill. “Spending a few summers with him as a coach, I knew how he ran his teams and I know his expectations for both the team and me, one of which is my using my right hand, which I’ve promised Fred I will learn. As soon as I arrived with the team the close family-like connection they had, made it apparent to me that this was where I’d love to spend my next four/five years playing and growing. Fred and his team have constructed an amazing, strong, hard-working, and determined group of young women and I couldn’t be more excited to be a part of it.”
