Tommies Defence Leads the Way Over Seawolves

Fredericton, NB- 

On Friday, the St. Thomas  Tommies secured their eighth straight win, where they went head to head against the University of New Brunswick Saint John Seawolves, defeating then in a score of 82 - 47.

 

Tommies' head coach Fred Connors said that prior to Friday's game the team was dealing with the struggle of injuries, and illness. Connors noted that it would be no easy defeat over the Seawolves. "They work very hard so we know we had to match their energy," he said.  

 

At the top of the first quarter the Seawolves were the first to jump on the scoreboard, but the Tommies were quick to answer back and took control of the first half. Bridget Frazee (Sussex, NB) and Vanessa Soffee (Fredericton, NB)  were prominent forces in the first half. Frazee had 18 points and 4 rebounds, while Soffee gathered up 14 points and 3 assists. 

 

The Tommies started off the third quarter with a 41 - 24 lead over the Seawolves. The Tommies only continued to keep their lead throughout the third and fourth quarter. With some exceptional defense, and consistent pressure on the Seawolves.

 

"It's all about the defense for us, I think we defended exceptionally well," Connors said. 

 

In the second half of the match Christina Richardson (Ottawa, ON) and Emily Owens (Fredericton, NB) led the charge towards victory. Richardson racked up 19 points, and 10 rebounds, while Owens had 12 points and 3 assists. 

 

Jillian McNally (Woodstock, NB) led the way for the Seawolves with 15 points, 5 rebounds and 3 steals. 

 

Connors said he was "very proud" with the way the team played. "I thought they managed a difficult game really well," he said.

 

The Tommies next game will be against the Holland College Hurricanes this Sunday at the Lady Beaverbrook gymnasium at 2:00 pm.
