X-Women Push Win Streak to 5 with 5-1 Win Over Tommies

Fredericton, NB – The St. Francis Xavier X-Women took a convincing win over the St. Thomas University Tommies, 5-1 Friday night at the Grant-Harvey Centre.

This Rivalry hockey night was one to watch with both teams gearing up for the playoffs. The X-Women played a fast and rough game giving them the edge over a confident Tommies team. Both teams having plenty of opportunities using their special teams with a total of 36 penalty minutes. Neither team, however, scoring a goal on their respective powerplay units. With the Tommies missing some players it was a struggle to keep up with the healthy X-Women squad.

The first period was a tight one with each team putting on pressure to take the lead, but they would head into the first intermission tied. Both teams kept it close matching each others pace and not letting up.

The Second period was again very close, but Emerson Elliot would score one to put the X-Women in the lead again and they would never look back. Although the Tommies wouldn't give up, as they kept pace with the X-Women all period only being outshot thirteen to eleven keeping the X-Women's lead to one.

The Third was where the X-Women really took it to the Tommies, scoring three to take the lead and game, five to one with goals from Jayden Thompson, Lauren Dabrowski and Kamdyn Switzer. The Tommies would fight by putting 8 shots on net, but nothing else would get past X-Women goaltender, Amaya Giraudier.

"We're missing a few players key players, I think once we have our full team back and we practice that will really help" said Tommies' captain Alex Woods (Courtice, ON). "That game just shows the level of playoff hockey we're going to see."

"We had lots of chances and that's something we weren't getting before, it's coming along," said Tommies coach Peter Murphy on their powerplay unit after going zero for twelve in tonight's game. "We're seeing some positive progress, that's how we build it, we can't just expect it to turn on".

You can catch the Tommies next game on Tuesday March 1st at 7:00 PM against Moncton.

You can also catch StFX's next game on Saturday February 26th at 7:00 PM against UNB.
