A five-year member of the women’s rugby team, Marissa Walcott (Oromocto, NB) had a tremendous career with the Tommies.

She is a four-time Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association All-Conference player, and likely would have been a five-time winner but the Tommies made the jump to the Atlantic University Sport for two years before coming back to the ACAA. She was a part of the last STU team to win the ACAA women’s rugby banner, a two-time MVP and 2014-15’s Female Athlete of the Year.

A double graduate from STU, Criminology in ’14 and Social Work in ’16, she now works with Social Development in Fredericton as a Child Protection Social Worker.

“I feel quite lucky to have found work in Fredericton,” said Walcott. “I live in Oromocto with my son, who just turned five this summer.”

It wasn’t just on the field where Walcott contributed, as she was part of team led volunteering opportunities such as: working at the Grace House for Women, assisting in their renovation and expansion, volunteering with the Fredericton Marathons, one in the fall and one in the spring, as well as volunteering with the Harvest Jazz and Blues festival each year.

Walcott is still very much involved in rugby to this day, coaching and playing.

“I still play rugby for the Fredericton Lady Loyalists and for the Provincial Senior Women’s team in the summer. I also coach the girl’s high school team in Oromocto in the spring. My son is also involved in the Loyalists Mini Rugby program.”

Having been away from the Tommies family for a couple years now, Walcott has fond memories of the sport and the school that have given her so much.

“I love the closeness that comes from being on a team like STU women’s rugby. I’ve made so many lasting friendships there. I keep in touch with a lot of former teammates and still play rugby with some of them. I can honestly say we have had the most dedicated coaches and supportive athletic director. I’m very proud to be a STU alumnus and I’ll always be a Tommie.”
