Season Recap

It was another great year for the women’s rugby team.

They went 4-2 in the regular season, and 1-1 in the playoffs. All three of their losses came at the hands of the UNB Reds, as they went on to win their 4th straight ACAA title with a 22-17 win over the Tommies.

The Tommies progressively got better as the season went on, with scores against UNB started with a 45-12 loss, then a 29-10 loss and finally the 22-17 loss in the finals.

“That was the closest competition UNB has received from anyone in a number of years,” said head coach Meghan Morrison.

“At the start of the season we knew we had so many first-year players joining us. We weren’t sure how it would play out. Steph [assistant coach Stephanie Carey] and I talked, and we felt this season was some of the best rugby we have played in about 5 years. Most of it was dealing with adversity in game, taking challenges and playing harder. It was a real team effort on the season.”

It is because of the team effort put forth from the Tommies that doesn’t have Morrison nervous at the thought of losing some core players.

“We are potentially losing a pretty core group this season, but with this year being such a team effort from start to finish, we are excited for next season,” said Morrison. “We still have a lot of young players, we did a good job of building skills up, and now it’s a matter of tactical and decision making on the field.”

Katrina LeBlanc (Rogersville, NB) was named the ACAA’s Rookie of the Year, while Meghan Pollard (Saint John, NB), Emily Donelle (Moncton, NB), Olivia Ricketts (Saint John, NB) and Abbie LeBlanc (Fredericton, NB) were named All-Conference players.
