Mystics Fall to Tommies in a Battle of Top Teams

Fredericton, NB - On a brisk Saturday afternoon at Scotiabank Park South the St Thomas University Tommies came away with a 1-0 victory over the Mount Saint Vincent University Mystics.

Coming into this game the Tommies and Mystics were tied at the top of the table with 22 points each.

It was a back and forth affair between to the two squads to begin, and both keepers were on their game. First up was STU's Mary Cronin (Fredericton, NB). The third-year keeper made some big saves early on to keep the Mystics off the scoreboard; first stopping Marilyn Burke (New Waterford, NS) and then making a stop on a corner kick before Leandra Upton (Fredericton, NB) cleared it off the line. Jessica Oliver (Halifax, NS) squared up a strike from 25 yards out, only to have just sail over the crossbar.

The score remained 0-0 at halftime.

The second half featured some more great chances, and it was the Mystics getting the first quality chance as Julia Short (Moncton, NB) hit a free kick from 30 yards out, but Cronin was there once again to get a hand on it to keep the Tommies even.

After being denied by MSVU keeper Caroline Larocque (Quebec) Nikita McCartney broke through in the 84th minute to get her league leading 13th goal on the campaign.

The Tommies are back in action Sunday at 12:00pm as they host the UKC Blue Devils in the final home game of the season, where the graduating players will be honoured for the Tommies. MSVU travels to Saint John for a date with the Seawolves.
