Tommies Battle to Draw With Seawolves

--- Sam Blackmore BA 2020 ---

(Fredericton, NB) The Saint Thomas University Tommies tied the University of New Brunswick Saint John Seawolves in their season debut at Scotiabank Park Field.

The game was neck and neck during the first half of the game but neither team could secure a lead. The tables turned in the first minute of the second half when a penalty kick by Seawolves' striker Karlee Duval resulted in a 1-0 lead.

It was unclear if the Tommies would be able to come to come back, but in the 85th minute of play, a scramble in front of the post resulted in Tommies midfielder, Phoebe van der Meulen (Summerside, PE), tapping the ball into the net.

"UNBSJ's goal was a bit of a wakeup call it took that to bring the team to life," said head coach Michelle DeCourcey. "If they had the same will to score from the beginning then it would have been a totally different game."

DeCourcey sees the Seawolves as a rival for the season.

"They have some really strong players and it's always a battle when we face off."

The Tommies will host the Crandall Chargers on Wednesday, while the Seawolves take on the University of King's College Blue Devils on Saturday in Saint John.
