Tommies Split Weekend Games in Nova Scotia

The St. Thomas University Tommies split a pair of weekend matches in Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association league play. The STU squad topped the USA Dragons 3-0 (25-13, 25-19, 25-17) and fell to the UKC Blue Devils 3-2 (25-21, 17-25, 26-24, 21-25, 9-15).

With the weekend results, the Tommies are now 3-2 on the season.

STU vs DRAGONS

The teams were evenly matched early in the opening set, but strong serving from Megan Mills powered the Tommies to a first-set win. It was much of the same in the second set—the teams were tied 14-14 before Hannah Millier served for three straight points and Veronique McGrath followed suit to close out the final six.  The Tommies held the lead throughout the third set on route to a 3-0 win in the match.

Hannah Millier connected for eight kills, four service aces, and three digs in the win. Megan Mills added seven kills, one service ace, and four digs.

Marise Gionet paced the Dragons with five kills, five digs, and one service ace.

STU vs BLUE DEVILS

In a tightly contested match, the Tommies had ample chances to close out a win but were plagued by unforced errors—they registered 17 serve receive errors and missed 17 serves.

The STU squad was solid in the opening set but fell behind early in the second. With the match tied 1-1, the Tommies showed grit and were rewarded by a great hustle play from Andrea Young and Deidra Jones that resulted in a 26-24 win in the third set.

UKC responded with hard hits, tough serves, and relentless hustle, which eventually gave them the edge they needed to take the last two sets—and the match—over the Tommies.

Jones led the Tommies with 13 kills, eight service aces, and eight digs, while Mills added nine kills, 13 digs, and two service aces.

Kristin Conrad paced the Blue Devils with 15 kills and 14 digs. Megan Gosse chipped in with 12 kills, five digs, and two blocks.
