Mystics Stay Perfect With 3-1 Win Over Tommies

Fredericton, NB - The Mount Saint Vincent University Mystics came into Fredericton and took care of business, dispatching the St. Thomas University Tommies 3-1 in ACAA action Saturday afternoon,

The Tommies came out of the gate swinging hard, led by Megan Mills (Fredericton, NB) who finished the match with 12 kills, but the Mystics fought back, led by their own left-side hitter Madison Urquhart (Sussex, NB), who finished the match with 21 kills.

"There are several good hitters in our league, and Madison is probably hitting as well as she ever has in her MSVU career," said head coach Don McKay. "She's finding holes and finishing hard. I feel we played her well, forced to hit some out and into the net, but she is one of the strongest offensive players in the league."

In each of the sets the Tommies opened up leads of seven points early on, but the Mystics wouldn't falter, fighting back each time.

The second set saw the Tommies hold onto their lead and claw their way to a 27-25 victory. The lost set marked only the third time MSVU has lost a set in the 2018-19 season.

The Mystics would take the third and fourth sets, 25-16 and 25-21, respectively.

"I thought we played well overall," said McKay. "Obviously you start strong in three of the four sets you would like to be able to finish strong, and we didn't."

The Tommies will host the UKC Blue Devils Sunday morning, while the Mystics will travel to Saint John to face the Seawolves. Both games start at 11:00am.
