Tommies Take Thriller Over Seawolves 3-2

The St. Thomas Tommies defeated the visiting UNB Saint John Seawolves 3-2 on Wednesday evening, 25-23, 19-25, 25-17, 13-25 and 15-10.

The victory marked the second victory in a row for the Tommies, following a 3-1 victory over the UKC Blue Devils on Sunday.

The Tommies were led by Megan Mills (Fredericton, NB) who had 13 kills and a game high 27 digs. Dayna Alexander (Jacksontown, NB) had 13 kills and 13 digs for the Seawolves.

The Tommies deployed several different lineups, including starting setter Lauren MacDonald (Fredericton, NB), her first start of the season.

"I just felt it was a good time to start Lauren," said head coach don McKay. "She's confident against UNBSJ, and good on her, she played well. I thought going with V [Veronique McGrath] when we did just gave us a little bit different of a look."

It was a back and forth affair all night as the teams traded set wins with the Tommies taking sets one, three and five, and the Seawolves getting sets two and four.

"That fourth game was horrible," said McKay about how that set played out for his team. "That fifth set though, wow. We were in control. We haven't done that very much against any team. I was very pleased with that."

With the victory the Tommies move into fifth place in the ACAA standings, while the Seawolves hang onto fourth place.

UNBSJ will be on the road Saturday in Truro to take on DAL AC, and the Tommies will head to Charlottetown to face the Holland College Hurricanes.
