Tommies Top Mounties 3-1 in ACAA Women's Volleyball

Fredericton, NB – The St. Thomas University Tommies bested the visiting Mount Allison University Mounties, 3-1 on Saturday night.

The Tommies had dropped the previous two matchups to the Mounties, both by a score of 3-0.

Megan Mills (Fredericton, NB) led the Tommies with 12 kills and had 17 digs to go along with that. Rachel Van Gestel had 9 kills for the Mounties.

The first set had the Mounties firing on all cylinders, working their way to a 24-18 lead before the Tommies came back with five straight points before ultimately dropping the set 25-23.

"Before the match we talked about wanting to send a message, because we hadn't beaten them so far this season," said head coach Don McKay. "We told ourselves it was time to step up and show that we can at least compete with them."

STU carried the momentum gained at the tail end of the first set into the second set as they cruised to a 25-14 win.

The third set was a back and forth affair that once again saw the Mounties hold a lead late in the set, 24-22 this time. The Tommies scored four straight points to take the set, before ending it in the fourth set with a score of 25-18.

The win keeps the Tommies in fifth place and the Mounties in fourth, which has them facing off in the first round of the ACAA Championships, beginning February 22nd at Holland College.
