Tommies Sweep Dragons 3-0

The St. Thomas University Tommies took down the visiting Universite Sainte-Anne Dragons 3-0 (25-15, 25-18, 25-10) Saturday night at the Lady Beaverbrook Gymnasium.

The Tommies came off the opening serve on fire, as Jenna DeGooyer led the team to 12-0 points to open the match, with six of those points coming via service aces. She would finish the match with 7 aces.

"She's been known to have a strong serve since she has been playing," said head coach Don McKay. "We have been working hard on her on the defensive side so she doesn't have to come off nearly as much as previous years, and we are very pleased with that."

After the 12-0 start the Dragons would finish the set on a 15-13 run, and would carry that momentum into the second set, where they would close the gap even further, dropping that set 25-18. Former Tommie, Cloee Daigle led the Dragons offensively with 4 kills and 3 service aces, and Patricia Breau had a game high 14 digs.

Despite the win McKay knows there are some areas his team can improve.

"We were doing some things that we could easily stop doing. Being on the net, missed serves, those types of things. We talk about that stuff and the onus goes back on them to be responsible to up their game in those moments."

The Dragons will continue their New Brunswick road trip Sunday when they travel to Sackville to face the Mount Allison Mounties, while the Tommies will play host to the Holland College Hurricanes. Both games are set to start at 1:00pm.
