Tommies finish off sweep of Aigles Bleues

Tommies turn attention to semifinal matchup with top-ranked STFX

MONCTON, N.B. (Feb. 16, 2024) - The Université de Moncton Aigles Bleues ran up against a flawless goalie with the help of her teammates and the St. Thomas University Tommies defeated the Bleue et Or 1-0 on Friday at the J.-Louis-Lévesque Arena in Game 2 of their Atlantic University Sport women's quarterfinal best-of-three series at the Moncton campus in front of more than 460 spectators.

The Tommies eliminated the Aigles Bleues and advance to the semifinal series, where they will take on the first-place STFX X-Women. St. Thomas won the first game 1-0 on Tuesday night in Fredericton with a strong performance from both goaltenders.

Katie Sweeney, the Tommies' Player of the Game, recorded her second straight shutout in the series, stopping 35 shots for the series-clinching win.

It was Jacey Dane'sgo al at 7:19 of the first period that made the difference in the game, the only one that crossed the red goal line.

Moncton goalie Annick Boudreau took the loss with just 11 shots faced.

Both teams were unable to benefit from a powerplay each - both penalties in the third period.

The game was fast paced, but it was played in the central zone with excursions into the opponents' areas. The defencemen were able to block shots and force play along the boards. Isadora Quirion was the Player of the Match for the Aigles Bleues.

Moncton departs in the quarterfinal round for the fifth-straight season. St. Thomas failed to make the playoffs last season, but return to the semifinals for the first time since the 2021-22 season where they fell to the UNB Reds.
