Mounties Drop Shootout Heartbreaker to Tommies
(SACKVILLE, NB) For the second night in a row, the Mount Allison Mounties women's hockey team took to the ice at the Tantramar Veterans Memorial Civic Centre looking for their first win of the season, this time against the St. Thomas Tommies.
Chances were created on the power-play by both teams in the first period but stellar goaltending from both Hanna Pagdado (Winnipeg, MB) of Mount Allison and Elizabeth Campbell (Black Diamond, AB) kept the score sheet clean after one period.
It was the visitors who struck first at 13:46 of the 2nd period as Amy Dvernichuk (Regina, SK) found the back of the net to give the Tommies the 1-0 advantage. Just over a minute later, St. Thomas would double their lead as captain Ekaterina Pelowich (Stouffville, ON) put the visitors up 2-0. Reese Chuback (Headingley, MB) would open the score for the Mounties with her second goal in as many nights on the power-play as her shot from the point cut the Mount Allison deficit to 1, a score line that would hold for the remainder of the 2nd period.
The Mounties would find the equalizer 9 minutes into the 3rd period as Mollie Grabe (Carleton Place, ON) took the puck the length of the rink and beat the St. Thomas goaltender to even the game at 2 apiece. Mount Allison would come all the way back from a 2-0 deficit to take the lead 3-2 with 6 minutes to play as Charlotte Swanton (Victoria, BC) put away a rebounded shot to give the home side their first lead of the night. The visitors would not go down without a fight however as they would score with under 3 minutes to play and an extra attacker on the ice as Ekaterina Pelowich scored her second of the night.
Overtime was not enough to solve the issue as this game required a shootout. After the first three shooters for both teams could not capitalize, it was Claire Nimegeers (Wilcox, SK) who scored the winning goal for the Tommies, dealing the Mounties a heartbreaking loss. Hanna Pagdado was given AUS Player of the Game honours for her performance in goal for the Mounties.
St. Thomas (6-3) are on the road in Halifax for their next game on November 10th as they take on the Saint Mary's Huskies. Mount Allison (0-9) visit the UNB Reds in Fredericton on Wednesday, November 8th. Both puck drops are set for 7:00pm.
