Tommies Survive Mystics' Late Rally

Fredericton, NB – The St. Thomas University Tommies weathered a second-half comeback from the Mount Saint Vincent University University Mystics and came out victorious by a score of 91-86 on Sunday afternoon. Harrison Florean (Fredericton, NB) led the way with 18 points and nine rebounds for the Tommies. Jaxon Smith (Halifax, NS) scored a game high 36 points for the Mystics and added six rebounds.

Tommies coach John Hickey was pleased about getting the win but acknowledged that the team was under a lot of pressure in the second half of the match.

"In the second half we let their shooters run free and they made shots and you have to give them credit for that, but those were open shots," Hickey said.

Hickey put a big focus on limiting the number of points that his team concedes and that was the story of the first half. STU restricted the Mystics to 33 points in the first half.

The second half saw the roles reversed and the Mystic put on a scintillating attacking performance led by Smith.

The Tommies had all of their starting players in double-digits. Vincent Lyttleton (Markham, ON) stuffed the stat-sheet with 15 points, five rebounds, a steal, a block and an assist each. Four of Florean's 18 points came in the fourth quarter and helped STU to close out the game.

"He's been very good for us all year," Hickey said of Florean. "Very consistent, making good decisions in the post and he's been doing a great job for us on the glass."

The Tommies will make a trip to Moncton for their game on Sunday against Crandall, the first of three, consecutive games that they will play away from home. The Mystics next match will be on Saturday when they host the Mount Allison University Mounties.
