Tommies Fall in Home Opener to HFX

The St. Thomas University Tommies fell in their home opener versus the upstart Halifax squad, 79-5.

The Halifax team, aptly named HFX, is comprised of students from Dalhousie University and Saint Mary's University.

The lone try for the Tommies came from second year winger Joey Hood (Charlottetown, PE), who scooped up a loose ball and took it the distance.

"He's a dangerous player when he gets the ball in his hands, so we need to try and do that more often," said head coach Curtis Lauzon. "There's no doubt he has speed."

Despite the score Lauzon was pleased to see the effort level from his team deep into the game.

"Some guys showed no quit throughout the eighty minutes, that was mostly our leadership group, including Oliver Larson and Zach Klassen."

The Tommies also had their depth tested early, as Jesse Reynolds was sent off with a red card, and first year players Sam Perkins and Alex Compton went down with injury.

"We have probably about five players who have one game of rugby played between them, so for them to step in and make the tackles they made. Phil Schwenteck is a new to rugby player and he probably made a dozen tackles today."

Next action for the Tommies will be Sunday September 22nd, when they host the UPEI Panthers.
