Fresh Faces Invigorate Tommies Rugby Team

The Tommies men’s rugby program is coming off a building year that saw them go 2-4 in the regular season.

Head coach Curtis Lauzon will be entering his third year with the team and has been busy in the off season with training regiments and recruiting. A solid core returns from the 2018-19 season and will be primed to continue to grow this season.

“Zack Klassen, Oliver Larson and speedster Joey Hood are three returners I am looking forward seeing back out there,” said Lauzon. “Zack is just coming back from the U19 Atlantic Rock program that won gold at the Canada Rugby Championships and Oliver was very dangerous in his rookie year. Newcomer Sam Perkins is another one to watch out for.”

Klassen was last year’s Most Outstanding Forward, while Larson was named the team’s Rookie of the Year and Most Outstanding Backfielder.

Last year’s team saw a youthful, fast and athletic team, and Lauzon wants to build off of that for 2019-20.

“Fans can expect a very dynamic style of rugby from this year's team,” said Lauzon. “There are many great athletes on the roster and we have given them the freedom to make decisions on the field.”

The Tommies kick off their regular season against the UNB Ironmen on Sunday, September 8th at College Field. If you are interested in playing for the Tommies men’s rugby team this year reach out to curtis_lauzon@hotmail.ca.
