Springer Scores Four as Tommies Clinch First

Fredericton, NB - The St. Thomas University Tommies continued their hot streak with a 4-0 over the University of Kings College Blue Devils on Sunday at the Grant-Harvey Turf Field. It was Brett Springer (Bamberg, ON) stealing the show in the Tommies final regular season game at home, scoring all four goals as STU clinched first place in the Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association.

Tommies head coach John-Ryan Morrison said despite clinching first with an undefeated record, his team has their eyes set on more accomplishments.

"We're trying to go undefeated," Morrison said. "We don't want to conceed another goal the rest of this season. That's the goal."

Springer scored twice in both halves, with the first of four coming late in the half at the 38 minute mark. His second goal came about as late as it could be - the 45th minute, just seconds before the final whistle of the half. But the break didn't cool him off.

Just two minutes into the second half, in the 47th minute, Springer completed his hat-trick, the second time he's done so this season. His other came on Sept. 10, the Tommies' season opener agaisnt the Dalhousie Agriculture Rams in a 3-1 win. But Springer went on to do more, scoring his fourth of the game in the 70th minute, moving around multiple defenders and the UKC goalkeeper before easily tapping the ball across the goal line for his 12th of the year.

Springer leads to ACAA in goals with 12, three more than Mohammad Alhaj Ali of the Holland College Hurricanes, as he inches closer to leading the league in goals for a second straight season.

STU now moves to a 9-0-1 record, as they have yet to allow a goal since their season opening 3-1 win. The Blue Devils fall to 5-2-2, good enough for 17 points and third in the ACAA standings.

The Tommies will finish their regular season next weekend, playing UKC again on Oct. 22 and the Mount Saint Vincent University Mystics on Oct. 23. UKC will head to Truro Oct. 19 for a night match under the lights against the Rams.
