Tommies Advance to Finals With 3-0 Victory

The St. Thomas University Tommies men's volleyball team have punched their ticket to Championship Sunday at the ACAA Championships.

The Tommies advanced thanks to a 3-0 victory over fourth seeded Universite Sainte-Anne Dragons on Saturday afternoon.

The Tommies were led by their two ACAA All-Stars Garret Dickson (Miramichi, NB) and Christian Christie (Langley, BC), who combined for 27 points on the day.

"The guys played a pretty clean game all around and Henry [Doucet] did a good job distributing the ball," said ACAA Coach of the Year, Henri Mallet. "We took advantage of some positive match ups, especially in the middle, and Garret and Adam [Hamilton] were able to capitalize on their chances."

The Tommies took the first two sets 25-17 before kicking it up a notch and finishing the match with a 25-8 set.

"USA came out ready to play," said Mallet. "I thought they played some solid volleyball the first two sets with Anthony Jacques leading the way. Being a team with less volleyball experience, I think they ran out of gas a little bit by the third set, and our guys kept pushing while being efficient from the service line."

The championship game will be a mirror image to last season, which saw the top ranked Hurricanes come into Fredericton to face the Tommies. The roles are reversed this time around, as the Tommies are the top seed this year on the Hurricanes home court.

"Anytime you have a chance to compete for a Championship, you have to consider yourself lucky," said Mallet. "Being able to do so, against the host team, will just help with a great atmosphere. We know they'll come ready to play. They have some key guys like Butler and Lapointe that will leave everything on the floor."

The men's final will begin at 2:30 following the women's final, which features the Mount Saint Vincent University Mystics and the hometown Holland College Hurricanes.
