X-Women Score Four in First, Beat Tommies 5-3

Fredericton, NB - The St. Fx X-Women jumped to an early start at the Grant-Harvey Centre, finding the back of the net 26 seconds in to take a 1-0 lead. Maggy Burbidge (Falmouth, NS) took a backhand shot that flipped over St. Thomas Tommies' goalie Caroline Pietroski (Etobicoke, ON). The X-Women went on to score four more times in the period, while the Tommies would get one from rookie Amy Dvernichuk (Regina, SK) after a scramble in front of the net, seeing multiple Tommies whack at the puck before it was burried. St. Fx went on to pace themselves to a 5-2 victory.

The opening period saw goals also come from Anna MacCara (Yellowknife, NWT) who scored twice in the period and Lauren Dabrowski (Tiny, ON). Pietroski was pulled from the game early after allowing four goals on 11 shots. Katie Sweeney (Tecumseh, ON) replaced her, making her first appearence of the season.

After a high scoring period, the second felt calm as no one was able to find the back of the net despite three powerplay chances - two for the Tommies and one for the X-Women. It wasn't until 25 seconds into the final period that someone would capitalize on a chance, as Emma Wilson (Midhurst, ON) put one past the goal line to split the lead in half, making it 4-2 for St. Fx. STU would get another powerplay chance late in the third, pressing the X-Women, leading to a X-Women breakaway where Chloe Vukosa (Mississauga, ON) put it past Sweeney for the final goal of the game.

Tommies head coach Peter Murphy said despite a slow start, he was happy with how his team reacted and kept themselves in the game.

"It wasn't really adjustments," Murphy said on their play after the first period. "It was mostly just reminding them that we're doing fine ... we were forechecking, turning pucks over, getting chances ... we're going to stick to our gameplan."

The Tommeis fall to 2-1 while the X-Women are now 2-0. Their next game is Oct. 15 in PEI agasint the UPEI Panthers, while the Tommies play at home again Sunday as the Dalhousie Tigers visit.
