Hometown Player Commits to Tommies

MJ English

Hometown: Fredericton, NB

Postion: Defence

Previous team: Rothesay Netherwood School Riverhawks

The Tommies have added their first recruit to the 2023-24 class - MJ English, a hometown player and captain of the RNS Riverhawks, has comitted to the St. Thomas University Tommies.

"I chose St. Thomas because it is a great school and comfortably close to home," English said of her decision.

English has experienced wearing the Green and Gold from an early age, having played with the JR. Tommies in 2014.

"I’ve looked up to the women’s hockey team since I was young, and meeting the girls really sold it for me when they made me feel so welcome. They’re a great squad and I’m super excited to have them as teammates.”

MJ recently won gold at the Atlantic Challenge Cup with the New Brunswick U-18 team and is in the selection process for the 2023 Canada Games team.

She will help bolster a Tommies blue line with an immediate injection of offence and stability.

Tommies' head coach Peter couldn't be more excited about his first addition to this year's recruiting class.

"We are extremely excited to have a player of MJ’s caliber joining our defence corps. MJ has size and speed and can control a game from the back end.  She can shoot the puck, but we see such a high ceiling to her game," Murphy said. "Her character is evident when you meet her and being named Rothesay Netherwood’s Captain this year only confirms that.  She’s a better person than a player and that is saying a lot - we know Tommies Nation in Fredericton will be happy to have this hometown girl playing for the Green and Gold."
