Tommies Move up in Standings, Defeat Hurricanes 1-0

The St. Thomas University Women's soccer team left it late to defeat the Holland College Hurricanes 1-0 on Sunday at the Grant Harvey Turf Field.

Michelle DeCourcey, STU head coach, spoke about the attitude of her players after the game and how that pushed them towards the victory.

"I think they were really eager to win this game and come back from our loss against Holland earlier in the season," DeCourcey said.

The game was a close one with very little to separate the teams until the final 10 minutes of the match. A Tommies corner led to major confusion for the Holland defence and Carolyne Roy (Sainte-Anne-d.-M., NB) was able to stick the ball into the back of the net. This was Roy's second goal in two days.

DeCourcey heaped praise onto her player after coming off the bench and having a significant impact.

"When Carolyne came in she brought a lot of energy up top and created some good opportunities for us."

STU is now above a .500 winning record at 4-3, slotting themselves into third place in the Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association standings. The Hurricanes at at an even 2-2-2, good enough for fourth place.

The Tommies next game is at home on Wednesday to the University of New Brunswick Saint John Seawolves while Holland will host University of King's College Blue Devils on October 15.
