Tommies Inch Closer to Playoff Berth with 1-0 Victory

Fredericton, NB - The St. Thomas University Tommies defeated the University of Kings College Blue Devils in what was a much needed victoy on Sunday at the Grant-Harvey Turf Field. In their final home game of the regular season, STU played a tightly contested game that didn't see a goal scorer until the 80th minute where Jayci Peck (Woodstock, NB) find the back of the net for the sixth time this season. Her six goals are the third most in the Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association.

The first half was scoreless throughout the entire 45 minutes, which saw chances come from both sides. It wasn't until the second half where the Blue Devils would get their biggest chance of the game, sending the ball across the crease, having Tommies goalkeeper Marissa Archibald desperately slide across her net to keep the game scoreless.

The Blue Devils entered today's match with a 2-4-2 record with eight points, as a win would have behind the Tommies and Crandall University Chargers for the final playoff spot. Peck broke the tie with 10 minutes remaining, sending a shot in the top corner. The Tommies were able to escape the match with a victory, as the inch closer to the ACAA playoffs.

STU now has an even 5-5-0 record for 15 points, as they now need at least a draw or a Chargers loss/draw to clinch a playoff birth. The Blue Devils fall to 2-5-2 with eight points. The loss eliminates them from playoff contention.

The Tommies will finish their regular season next weekend, as the take on the Blue Devils again on Oct. 22 and the undefeated Mount Saint Vincent University Mystics on Oct. 23. UKC will take a short trip to Truro for their next game to act as the visiting team against the Dalhousie Agriculture Rams.
