Tommies Need 5 Sets to Take Down Defending Champs

Fredericton, NB- The St. Thomas University women's volleyball team defeated Mount Saint Vincent Saturday, expanding their winning streak to 11 with a 3-2 victory over the Mystics holding their spot, 2nd in the ACAA.

"I'm pleased with the win," Tommies head coach, Don McKay, said after the game. "We weren't nearly as good as we have been, we struggled from the left side getting the ball down but again there are a whole lot of reasons for it."

Tommies main setter, Emily Dickson (Miramichi, NB), sat on the bench today with an injury, Caitlin Jones (Fredericton, NB) filled the role on the court but was also suffering from shin splints. The Tommies had to adjust their game play Thursday night at practice and struggled adjusting to it on gameday. McKay said, "overall though a win is a win".

Coach McKay is hoping that his players are healthy as playoffs come creeping.

"Right now, we have a lot of injuries," said McKay. "Just some little things that means they can't play 100%. If we are healthy, we are going to be tough because we are big enough this year to get some blocks, and if we are passing well we can run a good offence." McKay says he is looking forward to playoffs.

Hannah Millier (Fredericton, NB) and Caitlin Jones (Fredericton, NB) carried the team according to McKay. Millier the 5'10, Fredericton native played the middle calm and well, she kept her composure throughout the game and finished with a game high 17 kills.

Jones "did one heck of a job all things considered" said McKay. "Suffering from shin splints, she played her game and played it well."

Lis Rhymes (Dartmouth, NS) ended for the Mystics with 14 kills and 18 digs. Onye Njoku (Fredericton, NB) finished with 13 kills and 14 digs.

Megan Mills (Fredericton, NB) finished the game with 11 kills and 24 digs. The Tommies finished the game with 10 services aces.

The Tommies take on the University of Kings College tomorrow, 4pm, at The Pit.
