Cormier to add height for Tommies Men's Basketball

Tommies Men's Basketball Coach John Hickey continues to retool his program for a hopeful return in anticipation the 2021-22 ACAA season.  He adds Bathurst, New Brunswick's Shamus Cormier to add some height to the line-up.

The 6'6 Power forward who will graduate from the Phantoms program is excited to attend St. Thomas University and staying close to home.

"The biggest factor in my decision was how inviting and supportive both John and (Assistant Coach) Dominic Laviolette were, when they reached out and talked to me about the program and the school. I felt welcomed and wanted and was excited to be given this opportunity.  I've always loved the city of Fredericton."

Although Covid-19 is affecting his Senior Year at Bathurst High, he has been the team leader in shot blocks and rebounds, including nearly booking a ticket to the Final 12 in his Grade 11 year.

"I will bring a hard work ethic, and I'm dedicated to get better each day with a drive to win," mentions Cormier in his expectations of a career in Green & Gold.

Coach John Hickey loves recruiting players with Shamus's level of passion.

“We’re excited to have Shamus on board. Any time that you can add a 6’6” player with skill it’s going to help your program. We’re looking forward to watching Shamus’ development, as we believe that he has a very high ceiling.”

Shamus wants to "earn the opportunity to contribute to a winning environment and work as hard as I can to push myself and my teammates, so that the group can excel. I hope to be the best teammate possible and to have a positive influence on my teammates and the program. I plan to take the opportunity to learn from my teammates as well.

Although the STU Basketball teams have been working on skill development with the hope of exhibition play in the Winter semester of 2021, the Tommies anticipate a return to ACAA regular season play in the Fall of 2021.
