Edmonton's Ly lands at STU to join Men's Volleyball Tommies

The St.Thomas University men’s volleyball team is excited to announce it’s third recruit for the 2021-2022 season, welcoming libero Austin Ly to the program.

Hailing from Edmonton Alberta, Ly has most recently suited up for the NAVC Griffons and for the Louis St. Laurent High School Barons.

This is a move head coach Henri Mallet believes will continue to solidify the defensive back end of the court.

"With our current starter Branden Murphy going into his 4th year, we believe (Austin) Ly will bring long term stability to a key position that can sometimes be difficult to fill,” he said.

As the Tommies have also recently announced the commitment of Alex Frederickson, a libero from Winnipeg Manitoba, the Tommies now have an internal competition of three solid liberos that will help build success at the national level.

Ly has only suited up for the NAVC premier for one season, but where he may lack in experience, he makes up in other facets of his game.

“I will never give up on making a dig to give the team an opportunity to score a point,” said Ly.

He added that he is honoured to receive a chance to play for a program like St.Thomas, and after speaking to multiple current and former players, decided that it was a great community to be around and would love to play for.

Following consultation among athletic directors and a decision by the presidents of its member institutions, the Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association (ACAA) will be returning to full competition for the 2021-22 season. The 2021-22 schedule was announced in early July. The men’s volleyball team is expected to begin exhibition play in September.
