The St. Thomas University Tommies have bolstered their blue line with the signing of defender, Peyton Van Volsen. She joins Trinity Webber in the ’22-23 recruiting class.

Van Volsen is currently playing with the Etobicoke Dolphins of the OWHA U22 league and was drawn to the Tommies, in part, due to the community.

“I chose St. Thomas because the community looks unbelievable. The people that I have been in contact with are so welcoming, the psychology program and school type (smaller community) is the perfect fit for me.”

Head coach, Peter Murphy, was impressed by both Van Volsen’s offensive minded skillset, as well as what she brings off the ice.

“She makes a good first pass and likes to join the rush when the opportunity arises. She uses her speed well to get to pucks and close gaps on opponents. Peyton has a willingness to improve every time she is on the ice and possesses a team first attitude. Her character is reflected in the fact that she was the former captain of her junior team in Whitby. We know she will bring these qualities to the Tommies for years to come and we look forward to having her in Green and Gold.”

Despite the distance between Fredericton and Whitby, Van Volsen is confident St. Thomas is the fit for her.

“I know that it is going to feel like a second home, and I am very excited for my new adventure. I also cannot wait to be a part of the hockey team, from the talks I had with Coach Murphy to the players who have reached out, it seems like a very inviting and positive environment to be around. I am so excited to be a part of the team and the program Coach Murphy is running. I couldn’t think of a better fit for me in starting the next chapter in my life.”
