The St. Thomas University Tommies women’s hockey team is happy to announce their third member of the ’22-23 recruiting class, Payton Jacobs, a defender from Richmond, ON.

Jacobs will join Peyton Van Volsen as rookie defenders next season.

Jacobs is a “mobile defender with size”, which Tommies’ head coach, Peter Murphy, says are two assets every coach looks for in a defender.

“She uses her size well in the defensive zone and defends using good zone awareness for identifying her check,” said Murphy of his latest recruit. “She moves the puck well and has good gaps. Offensively she gets shots off quickly and on net.”

Jacobs feels that STU is a great fit for her, both academically and athletically.

“The hockey team and coaching staff have been extremely welcoming and helpful with the transition from high school to university,” said Jacobs.

Coming from Richmond, a town of roughly 4,000 people, the small town feel of Fredericton hit home with Jacobs.

“I chose St. Thomas University for a few reasons, one of the main ones being the small campus. I love the idea of community on the campus as I come from a small town, and it feels more like home.”

Murphy wasn’t just interested in what Jacobs brought on the ice, as she will be an asset to the STU community.

“Payton is a great fit for our program,” added Murphy. “She is a player of high character that wants to improve every day. We are very excited to add her to our family.”

Jacobs is interested in pursuing a degree in psychology and felt that STU gave her the best possible path.

“The program I am interested in offered many benefits and advantages that other schools did not, such as placement opportunities to prepare myself for my future career. Finally, from the conversations with the coaching staff and some girls on the team, the education and the small campus, I knew that St. Thomas University was the place for me.”
