Mounties Topple Tommies 17-5 in Grad Game

Fredericton, NB – On an evening where the St. Thomas University Tommies celebrated six graduating players, they turned in their best performance of the season against the visiting Mount Allison University Mounties, a 17-5 loss.

Mar Boucher (Clair, NB), Kyra Gate (Truro, NS), Samantha Longstaff (Centreville, NB), Melissa Totten (Truro, NS), Kassie Trainor (Hampton, NB) and Elizabeth Harmon (Queenstwon, NB) were all celebrated post game, as they are graduating Tommies.

The Tommies came into the game looking to avenge their opening season loss to the Mounties (43-14).

The first half was a defensive battle filled with great tackling and back and forth runs, culminating in a Kestia Milongo try for the Mounties late in the half, which would be the only score of the first half. Milongo would go on to score two more tries for the Mounties.

"We have really come together as a team since our first matchup," said Tommies' head coach, Nathan Bustard. "If we have two tapes of our games against Mount A, you wouldn't be able to convince me it was the same team."

On the first touch of the second half Milongo would scamper in for her second try to give the Mounties a 12-0 lead before Becca Ring (Saint John, NB) would score a try for the Tommies, cutting the lead to 12-5, but that was as close as the Tommies would get.

"The girls really built up this grad game, it was on a lot of people's minds that we ha da lot of really deserving graduates who have put a lot of effort into this program," said Bustard about his team's mentality coming into the game. "The younger players really stepped it up today, and it was almost the passing of a torch for some of these players. It was a really good energy today."
