2015 a Benchmark Season for Men's Rugby

It was a benchmark season for the men's rugby team at St. Thomas University, as the squad made its first Rugby New Brunswick Maritime University 'A' finals appearance in 11 years.

The Tommies faced the defending champion and cross-campus rival UNB Ironmen for the title, and after suffering two crushing losses at their hand in the regular season, put up a great effort in the final but eventually fell 53-16.

Team captain Johnny Cullen led the Tommies charge, scoring 11 of the team's 16 points.

The Tommies performance this season comes as a result of a culture shift in the program, which started when Jon Wilson took over as head coach. The shift has paid off and the team has progressed exponentially in the last few seasons—they went from having a losing record to finishing 4-2 in 2014-15, and built on that this season en route to their appearance in the finals.

Leading the Tommies this season were seniors Cullen, Robert McMichael, and Mike Irvine, along with teammates Austin Comeau, Justin Robar, and Christian Lakes.

Although the team will lose five veteran players to graduation this spring, a core group of skill remains to continue building on the program's success.
