SEASON RECAP: Tommies Improve Placing at CCAA Nationals in 2014

The 2014 Tommies golf season rates as one of the most successful in school history.

The first meeting of the year was an indication that things were going to be competitive as five new players attended.  Returning players Ryan Cooke, John Lynch, and Douglas Macfarlane were joined by Quentin DesRoche, Jake Lloy, Morgan Matheson, Nathan Harvey, and Brandon Pierce to play for the five spots on the Tommies team.

Erin MacIssac and Emily Francis competed in the ladies division for the second straight year.

The team's goal was to get closer to perennial champion Holland College and close the gap score-wise. As expected, Holland College won the ACAA championship with STU finishing second, but both teams qualified for the CCAA National Championships in Quebec City.

This was the second straight year that STU qualified for the CCAA's and four first year players—Nathan Harvey, Brandon Pierce, Jake Lloy, and Morgan Matheson— along with senior captain Ryan Cooke represented the Tommies at the championships.

The tournament was scheduled for three rounds but was reduced to two due to weather. The Tommies finished in 13th position, which was an improvement from the previous year. Nathan Harvey shot 79-79 to pace the team, while Pierce shot 80-82, Lloy shot 82-83, and Matheson shot 83-84.

With only two players leaving the program, the future for STU golf looks bright. With the experience gained from Nationals, STU will continue to work towards their goal of winning the ACAA golf championship.
