The Tommies men's basketball team achieved their goal for 2016-17—making the ACAA playoffs.

The STU squad was competitive all year, but struggled to get wins. By the final weekend of the regular season, the team's playoff hopes hung on the result of their final home game against the UNBSJ Seawolves. The Tommies were down 34-29 at the half, but held the Seawolves to four points in the third quarter on route to a 65-58 win and their first playoff appearance since 2015.

At the ACAA championships, the Tommies faced the Crandall University Chargers in the quarterfinals. The Tommies were up 32-31 after 20 minutes, but the Chargers came out strong in the second half and capitalized on their size inside. The Tommies battled but couldn't close the gap, falling 77-63.
