The men's basketball team at St. Thomas University has its goals set high this season, and brothers Sam and Thomas Drummond plan to do whatever it takes to achieve them.

Sam, co-captain and fourth-year Economics and Anthropology major, has been an asset to the Tommies team in his four years at STU, while Thomas is in his debut season with the Green and Gold.

The pair come from Harvey, New Brunswick, and have a history of sharing the court—first in Sam's senior year of high school and now in his senior year of university.

"It's way more competitive, we're from Harvey which is a small town and we have played some pretty weak teams. In this league, there are some tough schools, every team is good," Sam said.

Coming from a small town and now playing on a university-level team, the two have experienced both sides of the spectrum and use their individual skills to complement one another on the court.

 "Sam is good at cutting and it's good because I can find him and feed him the ball," Thomas said.

"Thomas is a really good ball handler, he plays more of a guard position whereas I'm more of a post position and wing, so a lot of times when he brings the ball up the court he can find not just me, but our other teammates too. He's great at ball-handling and making smart decisions," Sam added.

While they are competitive, Sam and Thomas both agreed it's most important for them to develop their games and become better individual players so they can apply their skills for the betterment of the team.

"I want to become better overall," Thomas said, "I don't have any numbers or stats that I want to get by the end of the season, I just want to become better."

"Personally I just want to have a good season and do whatever it takes to help, whether that means being active on the court or sitting on the bench," Sam said.

Despite the age gap between the two, they do get some court-time together. The brothers are both good decision makers and have their own unique style of play which has resulted in them falling in the same lineup once or twice.

"It's still early in the season and we're trying different rotations and subs, but I'm sure by the end of it we will be playing together more," Sam said.

While playing basketball is important to the Drummond duo, it's also great for them to be attending the same school. When they aren't on the court, the two can be found spending a lot of their free time together.

The Drummond brothers and their Tommie teammates, currently 1-1 on the season, are back in action Saturday, November 18 at Mount Saint Vincent University and Sunday, November 19 at UKC.
