Tommies Earn First Win With 95-67 Triumph Over Rams

(Fredericton, NB) The St. Thomas University Tommies edged the Dalhousie Agricultural College Rams, 95-67 in ACAA men's basketball action Saturday afternoon at the Lady Beaverbrook Gym.

The Tommies jumped out to an early lead when fourth year guard Travis Valanne (Miramichi, NB) hit a pair of three pointers, helping his team to an 18-7 lead to start the first quarter.

The Rams clawed their way back in the second quarter when they hit five consecutive three-pointers to narrow the lead to five points.

The Tommies were powerful in the first half, amassing 60 points and supporting a 25 point lead going into the third frame.

Both teams exchanged opportunities to start the second half, but the onslaught from the Tommies was too much on the day, leading 83-38 by the end of the third quarter.

Michael Otoo (Ottawa, ON) and Omer Hassan (London, ON) guided the Tommies with dual 20-point performances on the afternoon, and Almin Dervisevic had a triple double with 15 points, 13 assists and 16 rebounds. The Rams were led by guard Than Downie (Halifax, NS), who drilleda game high 24 points.

The Tommies are back in action tomorrow afternoon when they welcome the Crandall University Chargers to the Lady Beaverbrook Gym for a 4:00pm showdown. The Rams head to Saint John to play the Seawolves with a tipoff scheduled for 3:00pm.
