Watters Sinks Seawolves in Final Minutes

Halifax, NS- The St. Thomas University Tommies escaped a scare from the University of New Brunswick Saint John Seawolves in Friday's quarterfinal of ACAA Championships, winning 74-69.

It was former Seawolf Ian Watters (Miramichi, NB) icing his old team in the final minute, hitting a 3-pointer to put the Tommies ahead by 5 with less than 6 seconds.

"We call him Mr. Consistent," said Tommies head coach, John Hickey. "He had hit some big shots in big games for us this year."

The Seawolves ran up a 9-point lead after the first half, thanks in large part to the play of rookie, Jack Fury-Miller and Hunter Gray, the latter was near a double-double at halftime.

Almin Dervisevic kept the Tommies in it in the first half, despite taking a hit and opening up a cut above his eye. He had 15 points at halftime and would finish with 19.

"Al has been so great for us this year. His playmaking ability has been a huge part of our success this year," added Hickey.

The Tommies chipped away and tied it up heading into the fourth quarter, where the Tommies would take a 2 point lead with 30 seconds left and possession. The Seawolves decided to play it out and not foul and Watters would sink his shot to send the Tommies to the semifinals.

Gray and Dervisevic both finished with double-doubles for their respective teams.

The Tommies will now face the #2 Mount Allison Mounties at 6:30pm with the game being streamed on www.acaatv.ca.
