Curtis Lauzon to Take the Reins of Tommies Men’s Rugby Team

Curtis Lauzon has been appointed the new head coach of the St. Thomas University Tommies men's rugby program.

Originally from Bracebridge, ON, Lauzon moved to Fredericton three years ago and brings six years of coaching experience—along with a storied playing career—to the Tommies.

"I've played on some high-level teams and I was able to win championships, so I know what it takes to win," Lauzon said. "Having seen that as a player and now also as a coach, I feel that's my biggest strength."

Prior to taking the reins of the Tommies' program, Lauzon helped lead the U16 Ontario women's team to the 2014 national championship. Since moving to New Brunswick he's coached the U16 provincial team and has been involved with the men's high school team at Leo Hayes.

Lauzon said the opportunity to coach at a higher level is something he's been waiting for.

"I've always pictured coaching at the collegiate or university level," he said. "You're talking about school and the experience, from recruiting to coaching—it's a much wider portfolio than coaching high school."

Lauzon is taking over the helm from Jon Wilson, who stepped down after four years to continue his playing career. In that time, Wilson led the Tommies to two straight New Brunswick Rugby final appearances.

St. Thomas University Athletic Director Michael Eagles said Wilson did a tremendous job leading the program.

"Jon, along with his staff, were able to bring the team to a new level in terms of their pride in being a varsity athlete and the expectations that come with it, especially their commitment to academics," he said.

"Jon was a strong leader and was well-respected by the athletes and his peers. We wish him all the best."

Lauzon will have Eric Plant and Matt Coffey with him on the sideline to help maintain the professionalism established over the last few years.

"I'm similar to Jon, where I want to maintain a professional atmosphere. When we're on the field or out as a team it needs to be an office type feel," he said. "We're lucky that Eric and Matt want to stay on to help build and support that."

On the field, Lauzon hopes to get the program its first Maritime Championship.

"Over the past four years, especially the last two, we've been in the ball park with UNB," he said. "I don't think winning a Maritime Championship is a stretch at all."
