Former National Team Member Commits to Tommies

The men's soccer team at St. Thomas University has added national-level playing experience to its arsenal.

Kyle Yearwood, a skilled defender from Barbados, has committed to the Tommies and will join them on the pitch as they work toward another appearance in the Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association men's soccer final.

Having competed with the U17 and U21 Barbados National team, Tommies head coach John-Ryan Morrison said Yearwood is one of the most noteworthy signings in STU men's soccer history.

"Kyle raises the bar for all future recruits to our program and fits the mold of the type of player we need to compete for an ACAA championship," he said.

"He's been a team leader throughout his soccer career, he's been well coached, and he has big game experience, including representing Barbados at the 2013 Concacaf U17 World Cup qualifiers against Panama and Jamaica."

Yearwood, who attends King's-Edgehill School in Nova Scotia, was named the high school team's most valuable player in 2014-2015 and this season helped the squad claim the Atlantic Canadian Independent School's Soccer Championship title.

Yearwood plans to continue contributing to his team's success once he joins the Tommies.

"I will bring a high level of dedication, tenacity, and commitment, along with the experience I have obtained representing the U17 and U21 Barbados National Team," he said.

Academically, the future Tommie plans to study Psychology and believes St. Thomas's small class sizes, community, and campus create the right environment for him to succeed.

"I chose STU because it's a small university that offers big opportunities, and I believe it's the right environment for me to thrive," Yearwood said.

"St. Thomas has given me a great opportunity where I will be able to play the sport that I love at a high level while achieving my degree in psychology."

Yearwood is the third new addition to the Tommies men's soccer team. He is joined by local standout John Hunter and Alex Soulet of New Hampshire in the 2016-17 recruiting class.
