The St. Thomas University Tommies topped the University of Maine Presque Isle Owls 2-1 in pre-season men's soccer action Tuesday night in Fredericton.

Matthew McCarthy, a first-year player from Miramichi, NB, made the most of his debut with the Tommies, netting both of STU's goals. Fellow first-year Morgan MacDonald earned the win in net.

The Tommies, who started eight rookies, held possession most of the game against an aggressive UMPI team. Much of the game was controlled through the midfield by new additions Kyle Yearwood and Alex Soulet.

The Tommies are back in action Thursday when they host the defending USCAA National Champion University of Maine Fort Kent Bengals. Kick off is at 5:45 pm at Scotiabank Park South.
