Tommies Hand Hurricanes First Loss

The St. Thomas University Men's soccer team ended the Holland College Hurricanes' unbeaten run this season after a 1-0 win at the Grant Harvey Turf Field on Sunday afternoon.

Tommies head coach, John-Ryan Morrison, said after the game he was very proud of his team's efforts to preserve their own unbeaten record against one of the best teams in the conference.

"They've been our rivals ever since I've been here and it's good to get the result today," Morrison said. "I thought we played really hard in the second half especially against a great striker on their team as well."

This game featured the two highest scorers in the division but it was a defender who scored the decisive goal. The ball dropped to the foot of Evan Rees (Elmira, ON) who pivoted sharply and shot the ball straight into the bottom corner of the net just before halftime.

The Tommies defenders did well against the league's top scorer, Mohamed Alhaj Ali (Daraa, SYR) and did not afford Holland many chances. Morrison also spoke about how formidable his team's defence has been this season.

"I would take our back-four over anybody in this league and I think they have been outstanding all year. We've only conceded one goal this season and everyone is ready to step up."

STU remaines at the top of the standings with a 6-0-1 record. The Hurricanes sit in third, 4-1-1.

The Tommies next game is at home on Wednesday to the University of New Brunswick Saint John Seawolves while Holland will host University of King's College Blue Devils on October 15.
