John-Ryan brings a wealth of high level playing and coaching experience with him to the Tommies. He has represented New Brunswick seven times at the Canadian Soccer Association’s Challenge Cup, the highest level of amateur soccer in Canada. He has also won two NB Van Horne Cups and has won a bronze medal at the CSA Eastern Masters Championship as player/coach of the Fredericton Masters team. 
John-Ryan grew up playing in the FDSA premier system where he won seven provincial titles and went on to play for the UNB Varsity Reds before completing one memorable season with the STU Tommies, where he led the league in goals and was named the team’s MVP. John-Ryan started coaching at a very early age and over the past 20 years established a diverse coaching background including the FDSA Premiership Academy, FDSA Premiership U16 girls, U14 Boys and U12 girls teams, the Wanderers Senior Women’s A team, the FHS Varsity Girls & Boys squads as well as Team NB. He holds his CSA Pre B, NBIAA, NCPP Multisport and CSA Community level coaching badges, and was named the 2018 ACAA Men's Soccer Coach of the Year. 
Since his first season with the Tommies in 2015 he has led the squad to two silver medals at the ACAA championships, including a birth at the 2018 CCAA National Championship, the program’s first trip in 19 seasons.
