Tommies Drop Tough 3-2 Decision to Hurricanes

The St. Thomas University Tommies dropped a tough 3-2 decision to the Holland College Hurricanes in ACAA men's volleyball action Saturday night at the Lady Beaverbrook Gym.

Set scores were 22-25, 25-17, 25-21, 17-25, and 15-9.

The Tommies got off to a slow start in the first set and fell behind early. Strong play at the net coupled with efficient offense allowed them to battle back, but they fell just short of the comeback and dropped the first set 25-22.

The Hurricanes carried the momentum into the second set, jumping to an early lead. The Tommies settled in and closed the gap, but struggled to find consistency in their offense. Back to back blocks by Spencer Hay and Nathan Brown late in the set gave the Tommies their first lead late, which they never relinquished on route to a 25-17 win.

The Tommies came out firing in the third and held a six-point lead early. The Hurricanes hung around and chipped away at the deficit but weren't able to close the gap, giving the Tommies a 25-21 win.

A slow start for the Tommies in the fourth allowed the Hurricanes to take a 7-1 lead. The Tommies battled but weren't able to overcome the deficit, forcing a fifth set.

In the deciding set, the Hurricanes took the lead and cruised to a 15-9 win.

Brett Butler led the Hurricanes in the win with 15 kills and 10 digs.

The Tommies were sparked by Stephane Blinn, who connected for 28 kills and 13 digs in a losing cause.
