Tommies end season with win over Seawolves

The St. Thomas Men's Volleyball completed their mini-season with a 3-set sweep of the UNB Saint John Seawolves on Thursday.

After two controlled scrimmages with the UNB Reds of the RSEQ, the Tommies were able to get a home and home series with the Port City program.

The Green & Gold came out with an explosive start in the first set. The offence was led by Garret Dickson (Miramichi, NB), Adam MacDougall (Calgary, AB) and Dallas Melnick (Crystal Beach, ON). Storming to a 14-6 lead, the Seawolves closed the gap to 14-10. Tommies relentless applied pressure with numerous returning veterans from the defending ACAA Champions. Seawolves mad a good push through the middle stages but Tommies took the opening set 25-20.

The Tommies burst out of the gates in the second set.  After failing to record a block in the first set, STU get two in the first 10 points and roll to a 16-8 lead. The Green & Gold steamrolled to a 25-10 second set win.

The Seawolves managed to keep it close in the early stages of the 3rd set but Tommies kick it into next gear and run away to sweep the exhibition 3-0 by capturing the frame with a score of 25-13.

Both teams agreed to play a fourth bonus set which the Seawolves won 25-21.

the reigning MVP Christian Christie (Langley, BC) felt it "was really nice to be back on the bus with the guys travelling to games again. After a long year of unknowns it was great to get some games to end the year."

2nd year Adam MacDougall thought the Tommies executed better in the rematch.  "Our ball control was much better than last game, which made the rest of the game easier, and I think the score dictated that. Our energy was also better, which just made the game even more fun."

Knowing that many other teams across the country didn't have a chance to play means a lot to the group.  "It’s something that we take for granted to be able to travel as a group to play teams so this one meant a lot to be able to travel to Saint John and play a great game to end the season," added Christie.

The Tommies will be hopeful for a return to ACAA regular season competition in the Fall, when proper protocols permit.
