Tommies Swept in Regular Season Finale

Fredericton, NB – The Holland College Hurricanes swept the St. Thomas University Tommies on the final day of the 2022-23 ACAA regular season Sunday afternoon at the Lady Beaverbrook Gym. Set scores were 25-21, 25-12 and 25-21.

Cameron Calhoun led the way for the Hurricanes with 12 kills while Luke Hyde trailed with 11. Kiefer Sinclair set up well for Holland with 28 assists.

On the green and gold side, Adam McDougall (Calgary, AB) led with eight kills.

The win gives the Hurricanes home court advantage heading into the ACAA semi-finals, where they'll square off with the Tommies again in a best-of-3 series. Game one will be Feb. 15 or 16 in Fredericton, with game two Feb. 18 back in Holland. Game three will be in Holland if necessary.

The Tommies kept up in the first set – initially taking a 6-3 lead out of the gate. But a 7-0 Hurricane run to jump to a 10-6 lead flipped the set around. The Tommies were unable to recover in time, playing catchup the rest of the set.

Holland's momentum carried them through the second set, running away to take a 2-0 lead, keeping the Tommies from scoring consecutive points all set.

STU fought hard in the final set, giving the Hurricanes a run for their money. The two teams went point for point, as no one could take control until the Hurricanes broke through at the 20-point mark, scoring four straight. With the set score 24-20 for Holland, a service error gave STU a chance to comeback until it was quickly shot down, as a Hurricane spike would end the match with an exclamation point.

The Hurricanes finish the season 9-6, second in the ACAA. The Tommies finish third with an 8-7 record. Meanwhile, the University of New Brunswick Saint John Seawolves will take on the Universite Saint Anne Dragons in the semi-final.
