Tommies Bested 80-55 by Hurricanes

The St. Thomas University Tommies were bested 80-55 by the Holland College Hurricanes in ACAA women's basketball action Saturday afternoon at the Lady Beaverbrook Gym.

After a tight first quarter, the Hurricanes' offense came alive in the second. They shot 67 per cent from beyond the arc and were perfect from the free throw line, outscoring the Tommies 33-13 in the frame.

Down 46-23 coming out of the break, the Tommies worked to close the gap but struggled to gain any ground. Despite winning the fourth quarter, they were unable to overcome the deficit from the first half.

Cassie Cooke led all scorers with 13 points for the Hurricanes, while Jayla Verney added 12 and Darcy Zink chipped in with 11.

The Tommies were led by Sara Banks, who connected for 10 points and hauled in seven rebounds. Becca MacNeil added nine points and five rebounds in a losing cause.

With the win, the Hurricanes improve to 11-1 while the Tommies drop to 6-5.
